KNITTED PAINTINGS

This is an on-going series of knitted paintings that reference the work of 19th century French poet Stéphane Mallarme. In his poems Mallarme used the whole page as a field across which the text spreads – lines are dispersed like elements in a picture, words are given different sizes and typefaces. I began to produce a series of knitted paintings as a response to my own concrete/pattern poetry using random white and black stitches to create a simple, pleasing abstract surface that encourages the eye and the mind to wander as they do when we see natural forms like a field of grass, a seascape, or the sky at night.
